The 2026 NZIBES Gala Dinner and NZCBIA Excellence Awards filled the Great Room at Cordis Auckland with 850 guests. Orato Flow carried the four-hour programme in English and Chinese across the room’s existing screens.

THE CHALLENGE
Names are where live translation is tested.
Award winners, judges, scholarship recipients, companies and projects were announced back to back in English and Chinese. The programme also included te reo Māori project names, addresses, construction terminology, unscripted remarks and ten award categories.
With senior political, civic and industry speakers on stage, there was no second take and very little material that could be translated in advance.
HOW IT RAN
A custom glossary before the doors opened.
The event runsheet was used to prepare winners, sponsors, judges, scholarship recipients, company names and project terminology. This helped the live output preserve the way the association writes each name rather than relying on a general-language guess.
Terms could also be added or corrected while the programme was running, keeping spontaneous remarks, jokes and speaker changes clear.
VENUE INTEGRATION
One audio feed in. One video feed out.
Orato Flow used the Great Room’s existing production setup. The system received one audio feed from the venue desk and returned the camera picture with live captions overlaid for projection.
No separate screen was required, the vision operator did not need to rebuild the show, and guests did not have to collect hardware at the door.
THE OUTCOME
A bilingual gala without booths or 850 headsets.
Guests followed speeches, the report launch, scholarship presentations and every award category in the language they read. Translation became part of the screen experience already built into the room.
